Natural Remedies for Erectile Dysfunction: What Actually Has Research Behind It

Erectile dysfunction (ED) affects roughly 30 million men in the U.S. alone, and its prevalence rises steadily with age โ€” but it is not an inevitable, untreatable part of getting older.1 The natural-remedies market for ED is enormous, and unfortunately, most of it is marketing dressed up as science. Here's a clear-eyed look at what actually has evidence behind it.

What Causes ED

An erection depends on healthy blood flow, healthy nerve signaling, and adequate testosterone โ€” which means ED is often a vascular or circulatory issue before it's a "manhood" issue. Common contributors include:

โš ๏ธ Important: Because ED is closely linked to cardiovascular health, new or worsening ED โ€” especially in men under 50 โ€” can be an early warning sign of heart disease. It's worth mentioning to a doctor even if you plan to address it naturally.

Natural Approaches With Real Research Behind Them

1. Exercise (Especially Cardio)

This is the single best-supported intervention. A landmark study found that 40 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous aerobic exercise four times a week improved erectile function in men with ED related to obesity, hypertension, or high cholesterol.2 Exercise improves blood flow and vascular health directly.

2. L-Citrulline / L-Arginine

Both are amino acids that the body converts into nitric oxide, which relaxes blood vessels and improves blood flow โ€” the same mechanism targeted by prescription ED medications, just far more mildly. Small clinical trials have shown modest improvements in erectile function scores with L-citrulline supplementation.3

3. Icariin (from Horny Goat Weed)

Icariin, the active compound in Horny Goat Weed (Epimedium), has been studied in lab research for its ability to inhibit PDE5 โ€” the same enzyme that prescription ED medications block โ€” and to support healthy blood flow.4 Human clinical data is more limited than for pharmaceutical PDE5 inhibitors, but the mechanism is genuinely relevant, which is why it shows up frequently in men's vitality formulas.

4. Weight Loss

Excess body fat, particularly around the midsection, is linked to lower testosterone and higher rates of ED, partly because fat tissue converts testosterone into estrogen. Modest, sustained weight loss has been shown to improve erectile function scores in overweight men.5

5. Quitting Smoking

Smoking damages blood vessel linings and is one of the most well-documented modifiable risk factors for ED. Improvement can begin within weeks to months of quitting.

What Doesn't Have Strong Evidence (Yet)

Many products marketed for ED lean heavily on ingredients with thin or purely traditional (non-clinical) evidence, or bury underdosed ingredients in a "proprietary blend" so the actual amounts aren't disclosed. If a product won't tell you the milligram dose of its key ingredients, treat the claims with skepticism โ€” see our guide to spotting male enhancement scams for a full breakdown.

VigorRise includes Horny Goat Weed alongside Tongkat Ali, Boron, and 4 other researched ingredients โ€” fully disclosed doses, no proprietary blend.

When to See a Doctor

ED that is sudden, persistent (lasting more than a few weeks), or accompanied by chest pain, shortness of breath, or other cardiovascular symptoms warrants a medical evaluation before trying to manage it with lifestyle changes or supplements alone.
